Best practices for firing employees

Carolynn Levy, General Counsel at Y Combinator, the World's most successful startup accelerator, covers the legal issues to consider before and whilst firing an employee.

When firing an employee make sure you follow these steps:

1. Be very clear about why you are firing them.

2. Do this face to face with a 3rd party present.

3. Pay all wages and accrue all vacation immediately.

4. Cut off all of their access to physical and digital systems.

5. Immediately repurchase any vested shares the employee had.
