How much does experience matter for early hires?

Sam Altman, President at Y Combinator, talks about characteristics to look for in your first hires as well as how to question references they have.


1. Create a list of qualities that your first 10 employees need to have.

2. Think of a task that takes a day or two that would demonstrate that potential hires have most of, if not all of these qualities.

3. Make a list of questions to ask the references these potential hires provide such as; are the potential hires in the top 5% of people they have worked with? Would you hire them again? Do they have good communication skills? Would you describe them as an animal at what they do? Would you be comfortable reporting to them?
